Mr. Jarvis
Lorry is an official of Tellson's Bank in London. He accompanied Lucie Manette
to Paris. He had information about her father, Dr. Alexandre Manette who had
disappeared eighteen years ago was alive. He had been wrongfully imprisoned in
the Bastille and left there to die. Mr. Lorry and Lucie bring her father back
to London. Lucie planed to nursing her father back to health and sanity.
A few years
later, a young Frenchman, named Charles Darnay, was accuses of being a traitor
and a spy. Lucie and her father were reluctant witnesses for the prosecution. They
had met him while travelling from Calais to Dover. The evidence against him was
overwhelming as the prosecution produces a number of witnesses who swear that
he was a spy.
However,
Sydney Carton, an advocate presented in the courtroom who points out the
resemblance between the prisoner and himself to the defense lawyer Mr. Stryver.
The jury realized that it could be a case of mistaken identity and Darnay was
acquitted.
Years pass,
both Darnay and Carton fall in love with Lucie Manette. Lucie didn’t like to
Carton and he chose Darnay and they married. Finally, Sydney Carton decided to
save Darnay's life by taking his place. The sacrifice made to fulfill a promise
to Lucie whom he loves. Carton felt noble about his action and believed that he
will live in the hearts of the Darnay forever.
